Nwugo - A Born Lady

I met Nwugo as a colleague and friend in the Department of English in the University of Nigeria Nsukka and later played many roles alongside her at the great Nsukka theatre. She graduated a year before me and we lost contact. I have several times asked other friends and colleagues about her but never got any useful information until I just googled her name and received the shock of my life. All through our university days Nwugo stood out for her comportment and voracious reading and acting skills. When we staged Wole Soyinka's "Death and the Kings Horseman" Nwugo played "Iyaloja" the mother of the market and those privileged to watch her rendition of this role always asked one question, "Is that lady a student of this university or imported to give this play its commanding magnificience?" People always reffered to her as a lady because I believe she was born one, and most of us though her friends always held her almost in awe because of her natural carriage and commanding presence coupled with fantastic intelligence. In all she was one of the most humble persons I have ever known, ready with her beautiful toothy smile and with a book always tucked under her armpit. God has a purpose for everything and I must come out of my shock and wish Nwugo a rest in the bossom of our Lord. Good bye "Iyaloja". - SAM ONYECHI (ONOWU)
